    Stephenson is a terrific author---entertaining and informative. You may also enjoy "Snowcrash", "Cryptonomicon", and "The Baroque Cycle".

      i can't tell if neal stephenson's getting better or worse
      
      in some ways both - book 1 of the baroque cycle bored me to tears, but it still festers in my subconscious, demanding resolution... so out of frustration (rather than anticipation) I'll be picking up the other two eventually.
      
      anyway the diamond age is the most forward-looking novel of his, and my favorite portrayal of mems (or nanotech), and as such should be read in tandem with all tomorrow's parties by w. gibson
